WEEK 2
History
Similar to the way in which the Active task worked. Plenty to keep you busy. Maybe do one today and then save the others for the weeks ahead.

Science **APRIL FOOL**
Today we have added and extra task for you. We would like to increase awareness of a little-known endangered species: the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, and we want you to help us. First, go to this website to research this intriguing creature https://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/. There is a huge amount of information on this site, including pictures and a very informative FAQ section, so make sure that you look at every tab. Then, we would like you to create a fact file. Some things you could include are:
- picture
- habitat
- diet
- interesting facts
- map

Debating Task
A few of you have emailed saying that you are missing our ‘mini debate’ tasks in class. From today, I will add a little debate statement for you (designed to make you think) to our padlet on the home page of the class blog. The debate statement will be in pink to help you find it easily. Please add your thoughts to this note on the padlet.
Try to remember to approach this as we do in class …
- See if you can come up with a reason that is against your own personal opinion to help you understand other peoples viewpoints.
- Be respectful of other peoples opinions.
- Remember that it is okay to change your mind.
You don’t have to complete this particular task but it would be nice to see some of your thoughts! Happy debating 🙂

Reading
This week we will be looking at Chapter 6 of ‘Pig Heart Boy’, which I have attached below. There are 4 tasks which should only take 15-20 minutes each; try to spread them out over the week.

Task 1
For the first part of Task 1, you need to use the Power Point. You can answer the questions on each slide as you work your way through it (the answers are on there too so don’t skip ahead until you have answered each slide). After you have done that, have a go at the worksheet.
Task 2
For the first part of Task 2, I would like you to work your way through the Power Point, answering the questions as you go. As before, the answers are on the there so don’t skip ahead. Then I wants you do complete the questions on both worksheets. Task 3

The questions get gradually more difficult the further along you go, so only go as far as you feel you can, and don’t worry if you find them too tricky – some of them are quite a challenge! I will add the answers to the page at the end of the day. Just click the link again and they will be there, as if by magic. ☺





English
Task 3
SPAG Task: Your third and final SPAG task of the week is about revisiting the use of semi-colons and colons. Remember that a semi-colon links two related clauses, e.g. He is going bald; his hair is getting thinner and thinner. A colon can be used to introduce a list, to introduce an explanation and to show emphasis. Log in to Purple Mash and you will find today’s task.
Main Task: Your final writing task for the week is to use your story plan to complete the problem and solution parts of your story. If you want to jump ahead and complete the ending today, then of course you may. If not, do not stop your story after the solution; we will pick up the ending in our next English task. Remember that you may wish to use the resources below (from the Task 2 section) to help you use Year 6 level punctuation and ensure that you haven’t missed anything out.
Make sure that you continue to develop your character as you go along, leaving clues for your reader about the character through their manner of speech and their actions. Just as before, you MUST ensure that you use correctly punctuated direct speech and adverbials of manner to describe how the character is thinking and feeling, examples of the past progressive tense and develop your character.
Once completed, please check your work thoroughly (just as you would in class when using a purple pen to edit and improve your writing).
Task 2
SPAG Task: The second of this week’s SPAG tasks is set on Purple Mash for you. Please complete this BEFORE your story writing begins. The Purple Mash game today involves correctly punctuating direct speech. If you are incorrect, the question will not move on to the next one so keep trying. Remembering SCAPS might help you.

Main Task: Today’s task is to use your story plan to write the opening and build-up paragraphs of your story. By now, you should have developed your character really well and have a great sense of who they are within this story. Don’t forget to try to use your previous work on character to help give the reader the same sense of that character. The more the reader ‘connects’ with your character, the more they will want to read your story through to the end!
Some of you have written beautifully using a slow-write formula. You might want to create your own formula to kick-start your story with a very powerful and high quality opening paragraph that captures your readers attention.
You may want to use your Year 6 Expected Punctuation and Assessment Frameworks to help you develop your own success criteria. We’d like to see you using as many of these linguistic and grammatical skills in your writing as possible. However, you MUST ensure that you use correctly punctuated direct speech and adverbials of manner to describe how the character is feeling, examples of the past progressive tense and develop your character.

Task 1
SPAG Task: The first of your tasks this week is to use your SPAG booklet that you took home as a revision style warm up. Please concentrate on section two and then complete the mini quiz. Again, you can then use the mark scheme at the very back of the booklet to help you mark it.
Main Task: Your first writing task this week will help further develop your character ideas and prepare you for your ‘big write’ tomorrow and over the next two tasks.
Last week, you completed mindmaps (or similar), really thinking through your character and exploring areas like personality, behaviour and character. For your first task, I would like you to now take this further and write two paragraphs which describe your character and give your reader an insight to their personality. Please avoid writing these descriptions in a manner beginning “My character is …”. Remember to use the grammar and writing styles that you have learned so far this year to create something really interesting! You will be able to magpie the best parts of this for writing your story in Task 2 and Task 3.
You will also need to refer back to your story plan. Find three areas where you intend to use speech. The aim for our using speech in our stories is to advance the action (so no elongated conversations about the weather!). Once you have found three suitable places to include speech in your plan, decide what your character may say at that point in time and also think very hard about the manner (adverbial phrase) by which they might choose to say such a thing. The manner should give the reader a clue as to how that character is feeling or thinking. Choose the vocabulary and language that they will use carefully to show this too. Please see the example below. You may write your three speech parts into your plan or alongside your character description and just make a note in your plan to remind you to refer back to them when you write your story.

Speech example:
“I can’t believe it!” she exclaimed, clutching her hands together whilst a toothy grin stretched out across her face.
“I can’t believe it,” she muttered under her breath, the sound barely audible as she lowered herself to the floor and closer to the object.
“I can’t believe it,” she repeated in monotone whilst rolling her eyes.
In all three examples above, the same thing is being said by the character. However, each example sets a completely different tone for the reader and gives them a very different impression of how the character is feeling each time. This is due to the choice of punctuation, the alternative words used for ‘said’ and the image created by the adverbial of manner added to each sentence. Have a go at seeing if you can ‘set the tone‘ from your speech to give the reader clues as to how your character is feeling and what they may be thinking.
