Week 6

Friday – Maths & English

Maths

Warm Up Head on over to Purple Mash and complete today’s Number warm up.

Main Task The Friday Kahoot has returned! This week’s quiz will review what you have learned so far this week. Follow the link below to access it. Good luck!

Friday Kahoot Quiz

English

Warm Up – Head over to Purple Mash to complete your daily spellings task and also a task on building cohesion across a piece of writing.

Main Task – Using the mind map of key facts that you created earlier in the week, you now need to plan out a biography of your chosen scientist. You can use a box-up planning format if you think that that will help you (I tend to prefer these!).

If you completed your colour coded categories, this will help you to come up with subheadings for each section of your biography. For a reminder of what these might be, scroll down the page for a look at the suggestions made on Wednesday.

Here is the box-up plan template if you wish to use it: Biography Box Up Plan (Blank)

You do not need to write the biography today!

Thursday – DT

I have been excitedly waiting for it to be my turn to set a DT challenge. I have enjoyed seeing your blog posts where lots of DT has been going on from delicious cooking to sewing and woodwork! Well done everyone.

This week your challenge is to make a ‘marble run’! Below are some ideas. Let your imagination run wild, use anything you can find at home.

Perhaps you could time your marble, who can keep their marble moving for the longest time? Or maybe it could be about distance, who can make the longest run? Maybe you could take it outside and swap the marble for a football and try to create a ‘run’ around your garden.

For those of you who think you might like to be a future engineer…why not pit yourself against the design engineers at Dyson to create a marble run that takes exactly one minute! (Also available to download at the bottom)

Post photos or videos on your class padlet…I’ll be scanning through to see what you’ve created. Good luck, Mrs Fisher!

If you enjoy this challenge and want more DT inspiration, there are a set of activities available here:

Wednesday – Maths and English

Maths

Warm Up Spend the first 10 minutes of today’s Maths work practising your time tables on Times Table Rockstars.

Main Task Today, we are moving on to converting measures of mass. Just like yesterday, this will require you to be practising your skills of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. Don’t forget to use a place value grid to help you if you are not confident multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 mentally.

Use the “Converting Mass” section of the knowledge organiser below to help you as you work through the questions. Knowledge Organiser – Converting Units of Measure

The following YouTube clips from Khan Academy show short clips, which may help you. Khan Academy – Metric System Khan Academy – Converting kg to g and mg (Please note – do not watch the section on tons! You do not need to study this yet.)

Complete the following questions: Converting Measures – Mass

English

Don’t forget your daily spelling practice on Purple Mash! 🙂

SPAG – Today, we are going to review subordinating conjunctions and subordinating clauses. Take a look at the video below for a quick reminder (we have learned this before).

Oxford Owl – Clauses

Now, complete the following questions:

Clauses and Conjunctions – Part One

Clauses and Conjunctions – Part Two

Main Task – Your main task today is to research a key scientist related to the topic of Evolution and Inheritance. You will need to create a mindmap, which covers as much biographical information as you can find. Think about the following areas:

  • Birth
  • Childhood
  • Education
  • Family
  • Hobbies and Interests
  • What they did that made them famous
  • Their impact on the world of science

Once you have created your mind map, you will need to colour code the different areas of each to help you decide which bits of information should be written up into your biography. Doing this will make it easier to plan your writing tomorrow. The scientists that you can choose from are:

  • Mary Anning
  • Charles Darwin
  • Alfred Wallace

Tuesday – Guided Reading and Maths

Don’t forget your daily spelling practice on Purple Mash! 🙂

Guided Reading

For today’s Guided Reading, you will need to access the online resource that was sent out to you for MyON. Access it here: https://readon.myon.co.uk/ In the search bar, type in “Charles Darwin and the Theory of Evolution”. You will need the graphic novel written by Heather Adamson.

We will focus on Chapter Four. Read Chapter Four, then complete the vocabulary task (you can use a dictionary to help you) and answer the comprehension questions in your exercise book.
