A few parents have asked us about SATs revision resources.
The reading practice books that we use for homework are from CGP. They have a range of other revision guides and practice books that can be bought from: https://www.cgpbooks.co.uk/primary-books
The Khan Academy app and videos are also extremely helpful for tutorials and explanations in Maths.
Last week, we reviewed the use of colons and semi-colons. We also looked in further detail at how to use colons for explanations and emphasis.
Have a go at using these in your writing at home. Let us know how you get on!

In maths this week, we will be learning about area, perimeter and volume.
We have attached an example set of reasoning questions based on these topics.
In Maths this week, we will be learning how to multiply and divide fractions.
Today, we have learned how to multiply a whole number by a fraction using visual and written methods. The first image is a visual method for multiplying whilst the second is a written method:
Some of us have begun to learn how to multiply a whole number by a mixed fraction. When doing this, we are using the same written method as displayed above whilst also converting the mixed fraction to an improper fraction during the calculation process.
Practising these methods at home will really help support the learning in school as we explore calculating fractions further. This is also a key topic in the KS2 Maths SATs.
It has come to our attention that quite a few children in Year 6 are unable to tell the time.
This is a vital life skill and something that they really need to be able to do in preparation for the higher levels of independence and good time-keeping that they will need at Secondary School.
Unfortunately, there is not a vast deal of time in the Year 6 curriculum for teaching children to tell the time as there are many other things we have to cover (learning to tell the time isn’t a Year 6 skill and crops up much earlier in a child’s education – Year 2).
Please could we ask you to check if your child can tell the time on a traditional analogue clock or watch as well as a digital 24 hour clock. If they cannot tell the time, please teach them at home.
There are many helpful websites, tools and ideas out there to help children learn to tell the time. The following website has a range of ideas ….

This week the children have been valiantly tackling the world of fraction calculations. They have also been learning about Norse mythology in preparation to write our own Viking myths.
If you’d like some ideas as to how to support this learning at home, please see the information below….
Calculating Fractions with Different Denominators
In order to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, the children first need to find a common denominator. After this, they can find equivalent fractions and solve the calculation.
The Swans have learned a little rhyme to help them remember this process…
“CD, EF, replace and calculate.”
CD – Common denominator
EF – Equivalent fractions
Replace and Calculate – rewrite the original number sentence by replacing the fractions with their equivalent fractions. Then … solve! 🙂

Viking Myths
In class, we have been learning about the following Viking myths:
We will be using some of the features that are similar in all of the myths to help us to create our own Viking myths.
There are more Viking myths available to read and listen to on: https://www.storynory.com/category/myths/norse/
There are short animated versions of some of the Viking myths available to watch on:

Which is your favourite myth and why?
Who are your favourite characters and why?
What a wonderful, busy Friday we have had!
Take a look at some of the photographs below to see what we have been up to ….
Writing
We are about to start writing newspaper articles based on our class story (Floodlands). In order to help us start, we have imagineered the setting and had a go at ‘hot seating’ the main character. Several children thought about how Zoe (the main character in the story) would be feeling and created a back story whilst others imagined themselves as journalists, creating questions to interview our ‘Zoe’s’ with.

PSHE/British Values
Today, we revisited the following British Values: Mutual Respect, Individual Liberty and Democracy. We talked about a recent poll taken regarding age and voting. We did our own initial vote, listened to one another’s opinions (ensuring that we were respectful of differing viewpoints) and took a final vote.
Buddy Reading
This afternoon, we paired up with the Reception children and read them a story. Many children thoroughly enjoyed the experience ….
“I enjoyed sharing books with them.” – Austin.
“They are so cute! They listened really well and they asked me what some of the words meant. They joined in with some of the rhymes in the books.” – Ruby.

Congratulations to the children who have achieved their first 100 reads of Year 6!
